There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling den wagering is not legal. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and despite the fact visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most borders.

The 1st Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that contains a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
