There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that contains a number of comforts aside from the gambling den, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
