There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is against the law. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is real of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel building that features numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 tables.
